Longer Semi-Trailers Explained: The LST Guide

Longer semi-trailers explained: LST length and capacity, the rules for running them in Great Britain, and whether the extra pallet spaces pay off.

Longer semi-trailers, or LSTs, moved from trial curiosity to everyday kit when Great Britain approved them for general use in 2023. For the right operation they carry meaningfully more freight per journey for almost the same running cost. Here is what LSTs are, the rules that come with them, and how to judge whether they fit your work.

What counts as a longer semi-trailer

A standard UK semi-trailer runs to 13.6 metres. An LST extends that to up to 15.65 metres, a gain of just over two metres of deck. In practice that means roughly four extra UK pallet spaces per load, or around three or four additional roll cages, which is why retailers and parcel networks jumped on them first. Crucially the maximum combination weight stays at 44 tonnes, so LSTs are about volume, not extra weight.

The rules for running LSTs

LSTs became legal for general use on GB roads in May 2023 after a long trial, but they are not a free-for-all. The main conditions sit with the operator:

  • Same turning performance. An LST must meet the same manoeuvrability requirements as a standard artic, which is why nearly all of them use rear steering axles.
  • Route suitability. Operators are expected to assess and plan routes where the extra length can be handled safely, including delivery sites, and to brief drivers accordingly.
  • Site checks. Loading bays, yards and turning areas designed around 13.6 metre trailers need checking before an LST arrives, not after it gets stuck.
  • Driver familiarisation. No new licence category is needed, a C+E entitlement covers them, but the tail swing from rear steer axles behaves differently and drivers should be trained for it.

The business case

The arithmetic is simple: if your loads cube out before they weigh out, an LST moves about 8 to 15 per cent more freight per journey. Across a year of trunking that converts to fewer journeys, less fuel and fewer driver hours for the same volume, which is also why LSTs earn a place in decarbonisation plans alongside measures like HVO fuel and the practices in our guide to reducing fuel costs.

The case weakens if your freight is heavy rather than bulky, if your delivery network includes tight urban sites, or if trailer utilisation is low. An LST standing in the yard costs more than a standard trailer standing in the yard.

What they cost and where to find them

Expect a meaningful price premium over a standard trailer, driven mainly by the steering axle system, plus slightly higher maintenance on the steering gear itself. The used market has matured since the trial fleet dispersed, so good second-hand examples now appear regularly. You can compare LSTs alongside standard trailer types on TrailersLife, the dedicated trailer marketplace from Life Internet Services.

Bringing it together

LSTs are a proven way to move more volume with the same tractor units and drivers, provided your freight cubes out and your network can take the length. Do the route and site homework first, train drivers on rear steer behaviour, and the extra deck pays for itself journey after journey. When you are ready to look at stock, the Trailer Finder on TrailersLife covers the UK, Ireland and Europe, and the group’s other platforms at Life Internet Services cover the rest of the operation.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a longer semi-trailer?

Up to 15.65 metres, compared with the standard 13.6 metres, giving just over two metres of extra deck. That typically converts to about four additional UK pallet spaces or three to four extra roll cages per load.

Do you need special permission to run an LST?

No special licence or permit is required for general use in Great Britain, and drivers need only normal C+E entitlement. Operators do carry responsibilities around route assessment, site suitability and driver familiarisation, and the trailer must meet the standard manoeuvrability requirements.

Can longer semi-trailers carry more weight?

No. The maximum combination weight remains 44 tonnes, the same as a standard artic. LSTs benefit loads that fill the trailer by volume before reaching the weight limit, such as retail, parcels and packaging freight.
