Every fleet is being asked about its carbon number, and full electrification of heavy trucks remains a slow road. HVO fuel is the bridge answer more and more UK operators are reaching for: a renewable diesel that drops into existing vehicles today. Here is HVO explained, with the genuine pros, the costs and the caveats.
What HVO actually is
HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil, a renewable diesel made by treating waste fats and vegetable oils with hydrogen. Unlike traditional biodiesel, HVO is a paraffinic fuel meeting the EN 15940 standard: chemically clean, stable in storage, strong in cold weather and essentially a drop-in replacement for regular diesel. No engine conversion, no separate tanks, and it can be blended with ordinary diesel in any ratio.
The emissions case
Made from certified waste feedstocks, HVO cuts lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to around 90 per cent compared with fossil diesel. That is a whole-lifecycle number: the carbon still leaves the exhaust, but the fuel’s origin in waste streams rather than crude oil is what delivers the saving on paper and in carbon reporting. Local air quality benefits are more modest, with somewhat cleaner combustion but nothing like the transformation of a zero-tailpipe vehicle, so HVO complements rather than replaces the trajectory towards electric trucks, and it does not change a vehicle’s status under Euro 6 or clean air zone rules.
Will your trucks run on it?
Almost certainly. The majority of modern diesel engines, including most Euro 6 trucks and many vans, are approved by their manufacturers for EN 15940 paraffinic fuels, and OEM approval lists have grown steadily. Check your engines against the manufacturer’s statement before committing fleet-wide, and confirm warranty positions on older or specialist kit. Operationally, drivers notice nothing.
The catch: price and provenance
Two honest caveats. First, HVO carries a premium over pump diesel, which is why most adopters are fleets whose customers value, specify or pay for carbon reduction, a growing feature of contract tenders. Second, the environmental case rests entirely on feedstock integrity, so buy fuel with recognised sustainability certification such as ISCC and keep the certificates: auditors and customers will ask. Availability has improved sharply, with HVO now on the pumps at a growing number of bunker sites and available in bulk for yard tanks, and many fuel card networks now list HVO sites.
Who switches, and how
Typical adopters run contract work for carbon-conscious customers, operate from a yard where a bulk tank makes supply simple, or want measurable progress now while planning electrification later. Many start with a partial switch, fuelling part of the fleet or blending, which needs no infrastructure decision at all. The reporting benefit lands immediately in the fleet’s carbon numbers, which increasingly feature in tender scoring alongside price.

HVO is the rare green option that works today with the trucks you already own: real lifecycle carbon savings, drop-in simplicity, at a price premium that needs a commercial justification.
